Hi! Thanks for dropping by. Let me tell you a little about myself…

I am an acquisitions editor at Moody Publishers and a senior editor at CTPastors.com, a Christianity Today publication for church leaders. While I’m not wrestling other people’s words into submission, I’m busy doing battle with my own. I’m the author of Generation Ex-Christian: Why Young Adults Are Leaving the Church…and how to Bring Them Back (Moody, 2010) and Yawning at Tigers: You Can’t Tame God, So Stop Trying (Thomas Nelson, 2014). My work has appeared in numerous publications, including USA Today, CNN.com, The Huffington Post, Christianity Today, Books & Culture, and Relevant magazine.

The poet John Milton once stated that his aim was “to justify the ways of God to man.” That’s a great mandate. Alas, I’m no Milton. And my goals aren’t so lofty. I’ll be happy if my writing opens your eyes a little wider to God’s beauty, and leaves you looking slightly more like his Son.

More of My Story
I grew up in Red Deer, Alberta, (Oh Canada!), in a pastor’s family. I lived in an igloo and spent my childhood tracking polar bears across the frozen tundra. (OK, not really.)

When I was 22, I moved to Portland, Oregon, and met a beautiful girl named, Grace. She (somehow) agreed to marry me and we attended Portland State University together, where I completed my B.A. in English.

Next we moved to Pasadena, California where I earned an M.A. in Theology at Fuller Theological Seminary. Upon graduation, I took a job as the assistant editor at New Man magazine at Strang Communications in Lake Mary, Florida. In 2008, I was hired at Christianity Today International, where I now serve as the senior editor of Leadership Journal, the country’s premier publication for church leaders. In 2010, I started writing books and speaking at churches and pastors’ conferences.

During my twenties, I worked a string of odd jobs, pursued higher education, and moved like a nomad. Yet ever since churning out a sappy devotional for a Christian magazine when I was 19, I’ve had a desire to write about God. Today I feel incredibly blessed to be able to support my family by living out that calling.

Grace and I live in Portland, Oregon with our son, Athanasius, and daughter Mary.
